There’s a Party In My Guild and Everyone’s Invited

Adventure Log by Arxaggus Add comments

Adventuring fever is in full swing here in Westhaven.  The Band of Blades’ notoriety has only grown since we first formed back in late Spring.  We have since earned a reputation for success and have garnered the attentions of an endless swarm of thrillseeking lowlifes at the Hob.  I guess if you own a sword, five silver is a great price to pay if you want to murder goblins.  I can only wonder what these bar scum would be up to if the King’s militia weren’t a constant presence on Annabella’s streets and in her taverns.

Anyway, I reject most of them despite possessing a morbid fantasy as to just how quickly they would die once we were outside the walls.  There is, though, a steady stream of truly talented folk wanting to join up with us and in recent weeks our group has ballooned.  This week we left Westhaven eleven strong.

Our goal was to engage the…thing we fought a month or so ago at the old logging camp east of town.  We aren’t quite sure what to call it; I’ve taken to referring to it as a druid, as it seems to protect the forest there and it has a number of creatures that appear to serve it.  I’ve spoken about it with Elios and he’s convinced it isn’t one, but by our descriptions of it he’s hard pressed to come up with a more accurate title.  He’s found nothing about it in any of his books; it’s very possible we’ve come across an entirely unique being.  It’s unfortunate it must be destroyed, but the well-being of our home is of higher importance.

The east road proved uneventful again despite our scouts spotting more than one roving band of goblins.  The little buggers were frightened of a well-armed, mounted force numbering more than them.  Shit, I’d be terrified of us too.

As we arrived we immediately spotted a dark figure watching us from one of the far rooftops.  The Doc identified it as a Blackspawn, a type of dragonkin, clearly evil creatures.  We all moved to attack.

Ham, as is usually the case, acted first.  He attempted to scale a nearby roof, lost his footing on the rotted support beams, and fell to the ground, out of our sight.  He immediately let loose a cry of panic and pain, ambushed by something.  Xanytha and Meatwad also climbed onto roofs for a better perspective while the rest of use split up to flank whatever was between those two buildings.  Doc was first on the scene; he informed the rest of us that Ham was already dead and that two more of the black-scaled monsters had cut him down.

The creatures had used magical potions to ensure an easy kill on our brother-in-arms.  Now that that magic had passed, they were again visible.  The two that murdered Ham were easily cut down in melee.  The one that we initially spied came in from behind, again invisible, and nearly removed Signore’s head from the rest of his body.  Fortunately, the blade failed to finish the job, leaving Signore only with a gnarly scar along his throat.

After failing to secure the kill, the beast jumped atop the nearest roof and quaffed a magical drought, returning it to the safety of invisibility.  Doc tossed a flask of alchemist’s fire and set the roof alight, faintly illuminating the sight-evading dragonkin.  Drom swung his double-headed axe and chopped neatly through the rotting support beam, collapsing the roof and sending the creature tumbling to the ground.  Arpunia charged in, lance at the ready, but missed; her horse was more accurate.  A satisfying *crack* was heard as its hooves snapped a few ribs.  Arpunia, Skandale, and Xanytha get credit for hard-fought kills; sadly, the fourth escaped under the cover of its magic.

After resting for a moment, we opened the second building (the first had those blood spiders in it).  I walked inside and was immediately greeted by leafy vines attempting to grab me neck from above.  I fled outside, the thing succeeding only in striking me armor.  The Doc tossed a flask of oil in the roof; we aimed to burn the thing rather than risking our lives directly.  The evil plant reached out with a vine and grabbed Doc by the leg, then an arm and began to constrict him.  A few of us slashed at it with our weapons.

Meanwhile, a roar behind us caught me attention: three owlbears appeared from the tree line to the east and charged at us.  Wanting to quickly free Doc, I slashed carelessly at the vines, striking me mate instead.  Fortunately, he escaped by himself.  The vine then snatched Signore, who simply punched it with his meaty fist.  The vines slumped to the ground, lifeless.

Drom and I moved to primary engagement positions on either side of the camp’s old fountain; the owlbears engaged us first.  Arpunia moved to flank with Drom after the dwarf hacked at it with his axes, but the beast simply picked the armored lass up in its hairy claws.  Ever unpredictable in combat, she attempted a bluffing maneuver, then plunged her short sword deep in the owlbear’s ribcage.  The beast uttered a final roar, then collapsed to the ground.  The other two were defeated by good sword work from Signore and Hoedor and damn fine gunplay from Skandale.

Sadly, that druid-thing never appeared.  Maybe it knows we know how to kill it now.  Or maybe it just wasn’t in the area.  That battle will occur soon enough.
